Portland Winter Light Festival 2023 Huge Ice Sculpture Proposal
Want to be part of something cool? How cool? Ice Cold!
Professional Ice Artist, James Stugart, and a small group of skilled carvers are scheduled build a HUGE ice sculpture! How huge? How does 11ft tall sound? - That's right, this towering ice sculpture is planned to be around 10ft tall and 5ft wide in diameter - this will use around 26 blocks of ice with an estimated weight of 7,800lbs! (That's almost 4 tons of ice!)
This is in partnership with the Portland Winter Light Festival on February 3-11th. This ice sculpture will be displayed at the Pioneer Courthouse Square for all the public to see and experience for over a week!
A project at this caliber requires a lot of logistics, experience, time, and efforts. We not only want to create something huge, magical and awe-inspiring for the community. And this is where you come in, we are asking for some financial aid to help us make this ideal into a reality.
Ice carving is truly a magical art medium - it is so temporal and mesmerizing. An experience that transcends time and makes a lasting impression. But ice is extremely heavy, labor intensive, and hard on the body. It is an art medium that one wrong move can lead to serious injury due to dangerous tools and bone crushing weight. With this said, as hard as this craft is, we ice carvers are crazy to endure this medium, and could use a little help. These carvers are taking time off from their jobs and family to travel and help build this.
So, how can you help?
We have some donation tiers with incentives for our most generous patrons. An estimated 189,000 visitors experience this art event with around 86% being local residents. Your name can be on display for a hundred thousand residents to view you as a supporting patron of the local arts.
The Portland Winter Light Festival is a huge community event free for the public. Hundreds of artists display illuminated sculptures and performances during this weeklong event in downtown Portland and surrounding areas.
All donations will be used to fund the logistics needed to create this huge ice sculpture and as well to help support the ice artists. With help from people like you, we can continue to create more awe-inspiring public ice art for the Portland community. Below, is a donation chart with incentives depending on the charitable donation. For the higher levels of donations, James will carve a professional ice sculpture to display alongside this HUGE ice sculpture. Every donation helps, if you don't want to sponsor but would like to chip in, every dollar will make a difference. Thanks for being a patron of the arts.
Thank you! James Stugart and team
